Industrial Producer Prices Stable in Euro Area - August 2013

In August 2013, compared with July 2013, the industrial producer prices remained stable in the euro area (EA17) and increased by 0.1% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July prices rose by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU28.

Volume of Retail Trade up by 0.7% in Euro Area - August 2013

In August 2013 compared with July 2013, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade increased by 0.7% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.4% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July retail trade gained 0.5% in both zones.

Euro Area Unemployment Rate at 12.0% - August 2013

The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 12.0% in August 2013, stable compared with July. The EU28 unemployment rate was 10.9%, also stable compared with July. In both zones, rates have risen compared with August 2012, when they were 11.5% and 10.6% respectively. These figures are published by

Two-thirds of Working Age Adults in the EU28 in 2011 State They Know a Foreign Language

In the EU28 in 2011, 83% of pupils at primary & lower secondary level and 94% of those in upper secondary level general programmes were studying English as a foreign language. The second most commonly studied foreign language at both primary & lower secondary level and upper secondary level was French (19% of pupils in primary & lower secondary level and 23% in upper secondary), followed by German (9% and 21%) and Spanish (6% and 18%).

Euro Area Production in Construction up by 0.3% - July 2013

In July 2013 compared with June 2013, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector rose by 0.3% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.7% in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In June 2013, production in construction rose by 0.9% and 0.6% respectively. In July 2013 compared with July 2012, production in construction decreased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU28.

Euro Area International Trade in Goods Surplus 18.2 bn euro - July 2013

The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in July 2013 gave a 18.2 billion euro surplus, compared with +13.9 bn in July 2012. The June 2013 balance was +16.5 bn, compared with +12.8 bn in June 2012. In July 2013 compared with June 2013, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 1.6% and imports by 0.1%. These data are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Annual Growth in Labour Costs Slowed to 0.9% in Both Euro Area and EU27

Hourly labour costs in the euro area (EA17) rose by 0.9% in the year up to the second quarter of 2013, compared with +1.7% for the first quarter of 2013. In the EU27, the annual rise was also 0.9% up to the second quarter of 2013, compared with +2.0% in the previous quarter. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Euro Area Annual Inflation Down to 1.3% - August 2013

Euro area annual inflation was 1.3% in August 2013, down from 1.6% in July. A year earlier the rate was 2.6%. Monthly inflation was 0.1% in August 2013. European Union annual inflation was 1.5% in August 2013, down from 1.7% in July. A year earlier the rate was 2.7%. Monthly inflation was 0.1% in August 2013.

Employment Down by 0.1% in Euro Area - Second Quarter of 2013

The number of persons employed decreased by 0.1% in the euro area (EA17) and remained stable in the EU27 in the second quarter of 2013 compared with the previous quarter, according to national accounts estimates published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the first quarter of 2013, employment decreased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.2% in the EU27. These figures are seasonally adjusted.

Industrial Production Down by 1.5% in Euro Area - July 2013

In July 2013 compared with June 2013, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.5% in the euro area (EA17) and by 1.0% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In June industrial production increased by 0.6% and 0.9% respectively. In July 2013 compared with July 2012, industrial production dropped by 2.1% in the euro area and by 1.7% in the
EU28.
